007 First Light Locked In for March 18, 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2

IO Interactive has confirmed a firm release date for the Switch 2 version of its James Bond origin story, with pre-orders open and a GoldenEye Suit as the launch bonus.

007 First Light finally has a firm Nintendo Switch 2 release date. IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios confirmed on October 14 that the James Bond origin story will launch on the platform on March 18, 2027, alongside a brand-new gameplay trailer showing Bond running on Nintendo’s hardware. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version are open now on the Nintendo Store, on Amazon.com and at selected retailers.

The announcement, posted from Copenhagen, ends a long and increasingly public wait. 007 First Light launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 27, 2026, to strong reviews. The Switch 2 version was originally meant to ship alongside it, was pushed to summer 2026 in April, then in September was put back again to a vague “March 2027” with IO Interactive promising to name a day later. That day has now arrived.

IO Interactive’s framing for the delay has been consistent and specific: the extra months are going into performance rather than content. “The development team will use the coming months to continue refining the game’s optimisation and performance on Nintendo Switch 2, ensuring it meets the standard players expect at launch,” the studio said. To back that up, it has taken hands-on builds of the game to both gamescom and Tokyo Game Show, giving players and press their first opportunity to play Bond’s world on the platform — something IOI says has gone well.

The company has also been explicit about why the Switch 2 version matters to it. IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak said the studio pushed the release later in the year to allow more optimisation work, citing the legacy of Bond games on Nintendo platforms. That legacy is real and specific: GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64 remains one of the most influential first-person shooters ever made, and the console has not had a major Bond release since.

Which makes the pre-order bonus a pointed piece of marketing. Anyone who pre-orders the Switch 2 version gets early access to the GoldenEye Suit at launch via the Deluxe Edition, which IOI lists at $69.99, €69.99 and £69.99 SRP. The Deluxe Edition also includes the Gleaming Lighter, Gleaming Earphones, Gleaming Dart Gun and Gleaming Pen gadgets, plus four outfits: the Day of the Dead, the Desert Explorer, the Silent Anchor and the Gentleman Operator. A separate 007 First Light Special Edition, exclusive to Amazon.com, comes with the Classic Tuxedo instead.

The game itself is a standalone, re-imagined origin story. Players step into the shoes of a 26-year-old James Bond, a promising but sometimes rebellious Royal Navy air crewman recruited into MI6 and pushed through the training programme for the newly resurrected 00 section, earning his licence to kill along the way. Bond is played by Patrick Gibson, with Gemma Chan appearing as Dr. Selina Tan, an original character created by IO Interactive, and Lenny Kravitz as the antagonist Bawma. Familiar faces including M, Q and Moneypenny return alongside Bond’s mentor John Greenway and the mysterious Isola.

It is built on IO Interactive’s proprietary Glacier engine and blends the studio’s signature stealth and action design with the world of Bond, letting players choose between brute force, guile and charm. The score is by The Flight, with an original theme by Lana Del Rey and David Arnold.

The studio is not short of reasons to make the port land. 007 First Light was the first major Bond game in well over a decade following Activision’s non-exclusive licence, and it sold four million units by August 2026. Since launch IOI has shipped a substantial free update adding New Game+ and a photo mode, and on October 1 it teased more free downloadable content with details promised later that month — as this site reported at the time.

For Switch 2 owners who skipped the game in May, the maths is now simple: five more months, a version IOI says it is still actively tuning, and a pre-order bonus that nods directly at the last great Bond game on a Nintendo console. Whether the extra time produces a port that holds up on Nintendo hardware is the question March 18 will answer.
