Walmart Supercentre at Lime Ridge Mall Sets November 19 Opening

Signage at the Upper Wentworth Street mall now reads “Opening November 19,” pulling the new 140,000-square-foot Walmart Supercentre forward from the early 2027 date the retailer originally gave.

Signage now standing inside Lime Ridge Mall points to November 19 as the opening date for the new Walmart Supercentre, pulling the project forward from the early 2027 arrival Walmart Canada originally promised when it announced the store in November 2025. A freestanding board in the centre reads “Coming soon… Walmart” above “Opening November 19,” the first hard date the retailer or the mall has put on the project.

The store is a 140,000-square-foot Supercentre spread over two levels, which will make it the first multi-level Walmart in Hamilton. It is being built into the former Sears space at the north end of the mall, the stretch visible from Upper Wentworth Street, at 999 Upper Wentworth Street. Sears closed that location in 2017, and the space has been empty through the years since.

The timeline has moved repeatedly. Walmart Canada announced the store on November 27, 2025 as part of a $6.5 billion investment in its Canadian store and supply chain network over five years, and said at the time that the Hamilton location was expected to open in early 2027. The Hamilton Spectator reported in December 2025 that the store would be two levels and that construction was expected to begin early in 2026. By August 31, 2026, the retailer had posted job openings for the site, including a fashion team lead, a stocker and a deli bakery team lead, with many listings carrying application deadlines in mid-September. Then, in a September 8, 2026 expansion update, the company said the Lime Ridge Supercentre would open in the fall rather than the following year. The November 19 date on the signage is the first specific day attached to it.

What shoppers get is a full-line grocery operation rather than a discount box. Walmart Canada says the store will carry a full grocery department with fresh produce, a bakery and a deli, alongside expanded home, electronics and apparel sections and a Walmart Pharmacy. Online order pickup and delivery will be available, with the company promising delivery in as little as two hours in the surrounding area.

The jobs postings are the clearest signal that the date is real rather than aspirational. Retail construction of this size does not usually advertise team leads and deli bakery staff more than a month before a planned opening, and the mid-September application deadlines line up with a late-fall start. Walmart Canada operates 150 stores in Ontario, including six in Hamilton, and employs more than 45,000 people in the province, so the Lime Ridge location is an addition to an existing local footprint rather than a new market entry.

The store also matters to the mall itself. Primaris Real Estate Investment Trust bought Lime Ridge from Cadillac Fairview in June 2025 for $416 million, and the Walmart commitment is the first major tenant announcement since the sale. The centre has been working to fill space: Hudson's Bay closed its store there in 2025, and the mall has been adding smaller names alongside the anchor project. Andy Traynor, general manager of Lime Ridge Mall, said when the store was announced that the addition reflected a commitment to giving the community a diverse mix of retailers and an exceptional shopping experience.

Walmart Canada framed the store the same way. Shawn Fujiki, senior director of real estate, said the new Supercentre would help the company better serve local customers through a convenient store location and an expanded ability to serve the area through its delivery service, and pointed to the continuing growth of the city of Hamilton as the reason for the investment.

Not everything is confirmed. Walmart Canada did not respond to a request from The Hamilton Spectator for an update on construction progress or the opening date, so the November 19 date rests on the in-mall signage rather than a statement from the retailer. Store hours, whether the pharmacy will open on day one, how many of the advertised positions remain open, and whether the date holds if construction slips are all still open questions.
