McDonald’s Disney Villains Boo Buckets Arrive October 20
McDonald’s has confirmed its Halloween Boo Buckets are getting a Disney Villains makeover, with five pails — Ursula, Maleficent, Scar, Jafar and Cruella de Vil — reaching participating restaurants on October 20, eleven days before Halloween.
McDonald’s Halloween Boo Buckets are back, and this year the chain is handing the seasonal pails to Disney’s villains. The company has pushed the promotion across its own Instagram accounts. Its main brand account billed the release as “our scariest collab yet,” posting “disney villains happy meal boo buckets out 10.20.” Its Happy Meal account ran a teaser video on October 14, six days before the buckets reach participating restaurants.
The Happy Meal account’s teaser is short and, appropriately, it shows almost nothing. A video pans across five pairs of glowing villain eyes in purple, orange, white, green and red above a Boo Bucket lit from below, and a closing frame pairs the Disney Villains and Happy Meal Boo Buckets logos with the words “Out 10.20.” The caption reads “mom can u come pick me up on 10.20 im scared..” Fine print on the artwork credits both McDonald’s and Disney and says the buckets are available at participating McDonald’s for a limited time while supplies last. The company did not name a single character in the teaser.
The lineup comes from product images that surfaced online first. The fast-food account Snackolator published photos of the complete set on the evening of October 12, describing five buckets themed to Ursula from The Little Mermaid, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Scar from The Lion King, Jafar from Aladdin and Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians. Each pail carries the villain’s face on a base in that character’s colour — purple for Ursula, green for Maleficent, orange for Scar, red for Jafar and white for Cruella — with a gold handle shaped like the Golden Arches. The eye colours in McDonald’s own teaser match the leaked bucket colours, which points to the leaked set holding up. Even so, the company has not officially named the characters, and the specific lineup is best read as strongly indicated rather than announced.
The leak had more behind it than one account. A McDonald’s store manager posted a photo of the buckets to the McDonald’s Collectors group on Facebook, and the franchisee account McFranchisee on X, whose profile states that it does not speak for the company, also backed the images as real. The October 20 date originally rested on Snackolator alone before the teaser confirmed it.
Every bucket also ships with a sticker sheet that mixes Disney characters with McDonald’s items, the same format the pails have carried in recent years. The sheets effectively guarantee a second use for the buckets: decorate the pail, then fill it with candy.
The buckets replace the Happy Meal box and toy rather than sitting on top of them, which is why shoppers have historically paid only the regular Happy Meal price for one. McDonald’s has not published pricing for the promotion, and Happy Meal prices vary by restaurant. Reported contents for the run, taken from a leaked crew card, list the standard U.S. options: a hamburger or a four- or six-piece Chicken McNuggets, kids fries, apple slices and low-fat milk.
How long the Disney set will run is a different matter. McDonald’s has not announced an end date, or said whether every restaurant will carry all five designs at launch. Images of what appeared to be a crew card circulated with October 20 to November 2 printed next to “Buckets Available,” a two-week window that would close two days after Halloween — but the company has not confirmed that window.
October 20 is a Tuesday, which matters more than it sounds. Boo Buckets have landed on a Tuesday in mid-to-late October every year since they returned in 2022: October 18 that year, October 17 in 2023, October 15 in 2024 and October 21 in 2025. This year’s date is one day earlier than last year’s and 11 days ahead of Halloween, which falls on a Saturday. The buckets also arrive in the closing stretch of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which continues on select nights at Magic Kingdom through October 31.
The pails themselves date to 1986, when McDonald’s swapped its cardboard Happy Meal box for a plastic bucket nationwide for the first time, following a test run at select restaurants in New York and Boston in 1985. Those first three designs — McPunk’n, McBoo and McGoblin — were all orange and differed only in the face printed on the front. The buckets came and went over the following decades, disappeared after 2016, and returned in 2022 to a much louder reception than the chain had seen in years.
What is genuinely new this year is the licensing. Earlier Boo Buckets have used McDonald’s own Halloween characters, and last year’s five buckets were the classic Ghost, Pumpkin, Goblin, Cat and Zombie. Outside intellectual property is new ground for the promotion, and an all-villain lineup is a first for the pails. McDonald’s own wording reflects that shift: instead of presenting the release as another edition of its Halloween bucket line, the brand’s main account described it as a collaboration.
The timing also sits on top of a much bigger Disney bet on its villains. At its D23 fan event in Anaheim on August 15, the company confirmed that Magic Kingdom’s villains-themed land will be called Villains Land and named its two headlining attractions: a roller coaster themed to Maleficent, which will send riders through the enchanted briars surrounding her mountaintop fortress using elements the Imagineering team says it has never attempted on a coaster, and a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror, who meets guests in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace before carrying them into his Mirror Realm. The land was first announced at D23 in 2024 and Disney has not given an opening date. Maleficent is the only one of the five bucket characters confirmed as the subject of a ride, though the Mirror Realm attraction is built around a wider cast of villains.
For anyone chasing a specific villain, the practical advice from the outlets that cover these launches every year is unglamorous: go on day one, and go to more than one restaurant. The pails have always been sold at participating locations while supplies last, the sets sell out quickly at busy stores, and collectors generally go after all five. Reporting also suggests the promotion is not limited to the United States — early leaks pointed to a Brazilian launch on a similar timeline, while French coverage noted no release had been announced there — but McDonald’s has confirmed nothing beyond the U.S. market.
With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, an October 20 Tuesday launch gives families two weekends and a full working week to track down a set before the night itself. Whether Disney’s villains out-sell the pumpkins and ghosts of previous years will not be clear until the buckets are on the floor — and quite possibly not until they are gone.
