Mike Flanagan's 'The Exorcist: Martyrs' Sets March 2027 Theatrical Release as Full Trailer Nears

Universal Pictures has confirmed the official title of Mike Flanagan's upcoming Exorcist film: The Exorcist: Martyrs. The studio unveiled the title and a first look on the evening of October 6, 2026, releasing a teaser alongside it. The full trailer is set to arrive Friday, October 9, according to Universal.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on March 12, 2027, and no streaming release has been announced. Universal previously dated the project for April 18, 2025 and then March 13, 2026 before removing it from its release calendar in June 2025.

Flanagan wrote, directed and produced the film, which he has described as a new story within the Exorcist universe rather than a sequel to 2023's The Exorcist: Believer. According to a first look published by Esquire, Scarlett Johansson stars as an NYPD homicide detective and single mother. John Leguizamo plays a serial killer known as "Father Sunday," whom she apprehends early in the story, with Chiwetel Ejiofor as a career prison chaplain, Laurence Fishburne as the priest who performs the exorcism, Sasha Calle as a fellow detective and Jacobi Jupe as the detective's 12-year-old son.

The film is a Blumhouse–Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment and Red Room Pictures production, distributed by Universal. Producers are Jason Blum, David Robinson and Flanagan. Principal photography ran in New York City from March 13 to June 9, 2026, and the film is now in post-production.

Not yet confirmed: the film's full plot and runtime, its age rating, and the roles of several credited cast members, including Carla Gugino, Hamish Linklater and Rahul Kohli. The extent of any ties to earlier films in the franchise also remains under wraps.
