A remaster of Shrek 2: The Game appears to be on the way, after an Xbox Store listing for the unannounced title was published early and then removed. The page, reported by GameSpot, Pure Xbox and others, described a version of the 2004 platformer rebuilt for modern consoles with upgraded visuals and new features.

The listing named Aspyr Media as the developer. Aspyr has become a prolific port and remaster specialist, with recent work including re-releases of The Lord of the Rings games and Star Wars titles. The original Shrek 2 game was published by Activision for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube, and it was developed by Luxoflux.

What the listing showed

According to the store page, the remaster will feature better textures, an enhanced user interface and 4K resolution, along with updated cutscenes. It will also add a Photo Mode and a Cheat Mode. The listing said players can go solo or team up with up to three friends in co-op, either locally or online, controlling characters including Shrek, Fiona and Donkey.

The page did not include a release date or a price, and it was taken down shortly after it was spotted. Its appearance, however, suggested that a formal announcement was close at hand, and the timing pointed to an unveiling around the ID@Xbox showcase. The earlier appearance of achievement data on Steam and Exophase had already hinted that a project was in the works.

Why a Shrek remaster

Licensed movie tie-in games from the early 2000s occupy a particular place in gaming nostalgia. Many were rushed and forgettable, but a few, Shrek 2 among them, earned a reputation as solid, enjoyable action-adventures. The game let players smash, throw and kick their way through locations from the film, and its four-player co-op made it a popular choice for friends and siblings.

The remaster would let Aspyr lean on that affection. Remasters of beloved older titles have become a reliable business, offering publishers a way to reintroduce a game to an audience that may have missed it the first time while giving longtime players updated versions of something they remember fondly. The addition of online co-op would make the game easier to play with friends than it was in the era of split-screen and shared controllers.

Platforms and questions

The Xbox Store listing covered the Xbox Series X and S, and reporting suggested the game is expected to come to PlayStation and possibly the Switch as well, though a full platform list has not been confirmed. Key details remain unknown, including when the remaster will launch, how much it will cost and how extensive the changes will be beyond the visual upgrade.

Until an official announcement, the project is best treated as reported but unconfirmed. Even so, the leaked page was unusually detailed, complete with screenshots and a trailer, which suggests that the information is accurate and that an announcement is a matter of timing rather than doubt. For players who grew up with the original, the return of a well-liked tie-in game, rather than a quick cash-in, is likely to be welcome news.
