Apple TV Pushes Widow’s Bay for Halloween as the Full Season Streams
Apple TV has revived its pitch for the cursed-island comedy-horror Widow’s Bay, two weeks before Halloween — a month after the series took a record 14 Emmy wins and with a second season already ordered.
Apple TV is pointing people back at Widow’s Bay. On Wednesday the streamer’s official account posted a short pitch for its comedy-horror series: “There’s never been a better time to visit Widow’s Bay. #WidowsBay - Now Streaming.” The accompanying artwork is the show’s key art, and the timing is the point — the note lands just over two weeks before Halloween.
It is a nudge rather than a premiere. Widow’s Bay debuted on April 29, 2026, and its first season has been complete since June 17, so the full 10 episodes have been available to stream for months. What is new is the occasion: the series has just come off the most decorated run any freshman comedy has had at the Emmys, and October is when a show about a cursed New England island is most useful to a streamer.
The series was created by Katie Dippold, whose credits include Parks and Recreation and the Ghostbusters remake, and is directed and executive produced by Hiro Murai through his Chum Films banner. Matthew Rhys stars and also serves as executive producer. It is rated TV-MA, with episodes running between 31 and 48 minutes.
The premise is pitched by Apple in a single paragraph: Widow’s Bay is a quaint island town 40 miles off the coast of New England, but something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There is no Wi-Fi and only spotty cellular reception, and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants their respect and does not have it; they think he is soft and cowardly, and, the studio concedes, he is. Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds — tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right.
In practice that means the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again, and the show, in Apple’s phrasing, “blends genuine horror with character-driven comedy.” The curse itself is specific: anyone born and raised on the island is believed to die if they leave it for the mainland, a rule that shapes the whole town.
The structure is closer to an anthology than a season-long arc. As The Verge noted in an interview with Dippold and the cast, the overarching story of the town and its history is punctuated by episodes that each take on a different horror subgenre tied to a specific character — Tom gets a crash course in the island’s curses at a haunted hotel where time moves differently, while other episodes evoke Midsommar, Friday the 13th and, unsurprisingly for a New England island, a great deal of Stephen King. There are lumbering killers, sea witches, bizarre rituals and, at one point, a killer clown. NPR, reviewing the run in May, likened it to “a Stranger Things intended for grown-ups” with a retro feel drawn from 1970s and ’80s horror.
The ensemble is led by Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey, with K Callan and Jeff Hiller in supporting roles. Betty Gilpin guest-starred and won an Emmy for it.
For anyone who has not been following the show since spring, the September run is the context. At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, Widow’s Bay took 14 wins — six at the main ceremony and eight at the Creative Arts Emmys two weekends earlier — including Outstanding Comedy Series, lead actor for Rhys, supporting actress for O’Flynn, supporting actor for Root, writing for Dippold and directing for Murai, who became the first Asian director to win in that category. Guinness World Records recognises the haul as the most Emmys won by a comedy series in a season, breaking the 13 that Apple’s own The Studio collected last year. Apple said the wins made it the most awarded network of the year with 29 in total. This site covered the sweep as it happened, from the Creative Arts night through the record haul and Rhys’s two wins in a single night.
There is more coming. Apple renewed Widow’s Bay for a second season on June 11, and in August promoted Jeff Hiller, who plays Dale in the mayor’s office, to a series regular.
Which makes the October push straightforward arithmetic for viewers: a complete 10-episode season, a TV-MA rating, a second season already ordered, and a premise built around an island that wakes up angry. If the appeal of a Halloween watch is a horror story that is also genuinely funny, Apple’s timing this month is not subtle — it is just accurate.
