A new build of the World of Warcraft: Forever beta has arrived, and it brings one of the most sweeping sets of changes yet to the game’s racial abilities. The update, detailed in Blizzard’s beta development notes, reworks traits for many of the game’s playable races and touches systems across the experience.

Racial abilities have long been a foundational part of Warcraft character design, giving each race passive bonuses and a signature active skill. The beta build revisits many of these, adjusting their effects and, in several cases, replacing older specialization bonuses with broader benefits.

What changed for the races

For the Tauren, the endurance trait now grants increased critical damage and healing rather than a hit bonus, and the plainsrunning ability adds mounted movement speed while requiring the player to keep moving to maintain it, a change meant to prevent stutter-stepping from sustaining the effect. The Tauren’s cultivation cooldown was cut sharply, and war stomp was made available more often.

Dwarves traded their mace specialization for a new trait that increases critical damage and healing, and their treasure-finding ability now offers a chance at additional items from chests. Humans swapped sword specialization for a critical-strike bonus, and Orcs replaced axe specialization with a similar offensive trait while seeing adjustments to their blood fury and shatter curse abilities.

Other races received comparable treatment. Undead saw their touch abilities retuned for more consistent benefit, Gnomes had a buff reworked to remove charges while extending to more effects, Night Elves had their movement bonus made to stack, and Trolls saw their health regeneration bonus increased. The new Skyborne race also received adjustments, with several abilities made usable while moving and cooldowns shortened.

Systems and quality of life

Beyond the racial changes, the build adds a new tutorial experience for players new to the game, offering a clearer introduction than the existing flow. The cooldown manager now supports all classes, racial abilities and trinkets, expanding a tool that helps players track when abilities are ready. Support for the Rogue class was also added, and duplicate spell-rank entries were cleaned up.

Gamepad support received attention as well, including an auto attack and auto shot setting for Hunters that works with a controller. Experience calculation for party play was reverted to an earlier behavior in which only each individual character’s level matters, which the developers said should substantially increase experience earned in dungeons for most players.

A beta still in motion

The notes describe an ongoing test rather than a finished release. Blizzard has continued to update the beta with new builds, and the changes to racial abilities in particular are the kind that generate extensive discussion among players, who debate balance and the identity each race is meant to carry.

Reworks of this scale are also a reminder of how much history the game carries. Many of the abilities being revised have been part of Warcraft for years, and altering them touches both gameplay and nostalgia. Blizzard framed the changes as refinements aimed at making the abilities more consistent and more useful. As with any beta, further adjustments are likely before release, and the development notes are the clearest window into what the team is testing. For players following the project, the racial update is a signal of how thoroughly the game is being revisited rather than simply reissued.
