Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, based on CD Projekt Red's role-playing game. The news broke on October 8, 2026, with Deadline reporting it as an exclusive and Variety confirming the project separately the same day.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached alongside CD Projekt Red, the Warsaw-based developer and holder of the franchise rights, which is also producing. Di Bonaventura's credits include several Transformers films as well as G.I. Joe, Snake Eyes and Madame Web. He is currently working on a new Transformers live-action film with Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay.

Beyond those two producers, little has been established. Paramount has not announced a writer, a director, any casting, or a release date. The project appears to be at an early stage, which in practice means the schedule could be measured in years rather than months and that the creative team may still change.

Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020 after a long and much-publicised delay, and its opening weeks were badly affected by performance problems on consoles without ray tracing. It recovered strongly: CD Projekt Red has sold 40 million copies worldwide, and the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million more. The studio has previously described the launch difficulties openly.

The story the film would draw on follows V, a mercenary who takes a job that leaves them dying with a biochip lodged in their skull. The chip holds the digitized consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a rock star turned criminal who was murdered by the megacorporation Arasaka, played in the game by Keanu Reeves. V and Johnny have to work out how to separate the two minds before V dies, all while running a counter-plot against Arasaka. Phantom Liberty adds a spy-thriller strand set in the same city.

Phantom Liberty, the expansion, arrived on September 26, 2023. It keeps V as the player character but pushes the story into espionage: after the orbital shuttle carrying the President of the New United States is shot down over Dogtown, Night City's deadliest district, V is drawn into a rescue mission alongside NUSA agent Solomon Reed, played by Idris Elba. It also added a new Relic skill tree and vehicle, the Quadra Sport R-7.

The franchise has already been adapted away from the game. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an animated series produced with Trigger, premiered in 2022 and was followed by a second season arriving in October 2026.

The project lands in a crowded period for game adaptations. Paramount is already behind a Street Fighter film co-produced with Legendary that opens on October 16, and has a Call of Duty film with Peter Berg directing and co-writing alongside Taylor Sheridan. Hollywood's recent record on adaptations is mixed — earlier attempts were poorly received, while more recent ones aimed at broad audiences have earned substantial money.

Adapting a game with this much material is not straightforward, and the shape of the story matters. V's plot is tightly bound to a first-person structure and a countdown, which is hard to translate to a fixed running time, and Reeves is returning to the role in Phantom Liberty, keeping him connected to the property even where he may not appear in a film.

Not yet confirmed: casting. Johnny Silverhand is the role most widely assumed to be up for grabs, given that Reeves played him in the game, but Paramount has said nothing about who, if anyone, returns to the role. Whether the film adapts V's story directly, draws on Phantom Liberty, or takes a new angle has also not been set out.
