Universal Orlando has moved the reopening of Jurassic Park River Adventure back by close to a month, pushing the Islands of Adventure water ride's return from November 19 to December 16, 2026. The theme park operator updated the date on its public park hours and closures page, and the change was spotted in the early hours of October 9.
The delay makes this the longest closure in the attraction's history. River Adventure opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999 and has normally shut for only a few weeks at a time for waterway cleaning and show-element repairs. This refurbishment began on January 5, 2026, and on the revised date guests will have been shut out for more than eleven months.
Universal has described the closure only as planned maintenance. The resort has not published an engineering account of the work, and construction signage around the attraction has said nothing more than a vague return in late 2026 — which is why the exact date on the hours page has been the thing to watch.
The length is not hard to explain once the ride's construction is taken into account. The attraction has been running since 1999, and its audio-animatronics need regular servicing to stay both safe and operational. Water rides take more punishment than dry attractions, and large sections of River Adventure sit outdoors, which adds wear. Aerial photography taken through the year has shown rebuilt paddock walls, fresh rockwork, replacement queue sections and scaffolding coming down, with the larger figures — the Ultrasaurus and Stegosaurus — back in place. As of early October, the park was still working on the environments and the figures rather than finishing touch-ups.
For months the open question was whether the ride would be rethemed. Early in the closure some fans floated the idea that Universal was reimagining the attraction as Jurassic World, following Universal Studios Hollywood, which converted its version into Jurassic World: The Ride in 2019. Universal has never confirmed that. The aerial images through the summer have instead pointed the other way, showing work consistent with refurbishing the original 1993 Jurassic Park theming in place. That reading is an interpretation of construction photos rather than a statement from the resort, and nothing official has settled it.
The timing is the awkward part. A December return puts an 85-foot plunge and a full drench into the tail of the Florida season. Orlando afternoons in December typically reach the low 70s Fahrenheit, but overnight lows can fall into the low 50s, which makes the ride a considerably different proposition than the summer version most guests remember. It does, however, land the attraction back in service ahead of the holiday period, when the parks are at their busiest.
River Adventure is not the only Islands of Adventure water ride going dark soon. Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges is scheduled to close from January 4 to February 2, 2027, and at Epic Universe, Fyre Drill will close from January 25 to February 4, 2027. Elsewhere in the park, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is listed for February 8 to 19, 2027, and the Hogwarts Express has a one-day closure on November 4, 2026. Universal is also counting down to the permanent closure of Animal Actors On Location! at Universal Studios Florida, whose final performances are November 2 before the 36-year-old show makes way for something new.
Not yet confirmed: whether the refurbishment changed any of the ride's scenes or effects, whether any part of it becomes a Jurassic World retheme, and whether December 16 is a firm date or an early target. Water rides carrying large animatronics need extensive testing before guests return, and refurbishment reopenings have a habit of moving by a few days either way.
